Where Welded Stainless Construction Fits
Welded stainless steel tanks are selected when a project needs a continuous fabricated shell, a cleanable metallic surface, and a stainless grade compatible with the stored liquid. Typical enquiries involve food and beverage ingredients, purified or process water, edible oils, liquid additives, and chemical duties that have passed a formal material-compatibility review. Stainless construction is not automatically suitable for every corrosive liquid, and the grade cannot be chosen from the word “stainless” alone.
This page is intentionally separate from stainless steel bolted tanks. A welded tank relies on shop or field welding, welding procedure control, heat-affected-zone management, dimensional checks, and a defined inspection plan. A bolted tank uses modular panels and sealed joints. The right construction route depends on capacity, transport limits, site access, hygiene expectations, installation schedule, and future maintenance.
For global projects, the contract should identify the required design basis and local approval path. Atmospheric storage may use an owner specification or a recognized tank standard where applicable; pressurized duty must be treated as a pressure-vessel project rather than assumed to fall under an atmospheric tank design. The manufacturer needs actual design pressure and vacuum, temperature, density, site loads, and nozzle reactions before confirming the structural basis.
Welded Stainless Tank Selection Matrix
| Decision area | Buyer information required |
|---|---|
| Stored media | Composition, concentration, contaminants, chloride level where relevant, temperature, density, vapor exposure, and safety data sheet. |
| Material and finish | Required grade, plate finish, internal roughness or cleanability expectation, pickling/passivation scope, and restrictions on wetted materials. |
| Tank geometry | Gross and usable volume, diameter/height envelope, vertical or horizontal orientation, bottom slope, roof type, freeboard, and drainage requirement. |
| Process interfaces | Nozzles, manways, vents, overflow, level instruments, agitation, heating/cooling, load cells, sampling, CIP devices, and external pipe loads. |
| Quality documents | Material certificates, weld map, WPS/PQR, welder qualifications, NDE scope, dimensional report, pressure/leak test record, and surface-treatment record. |
Material Grade Must Follow the Service
Grades such as 304L and 316L are often discussed, but grade selection must be based on the complete environment. Chlorides, acids, alkalis, cleaning chemicals, temperature, oxygen availability, crevices, deposits, and vapor-space condensation can change the corrosion mechanism. A generic supplier statement cannot replace a compatibility review by the owner or project engineer.
The RFQ should also state whether carbon steel attachments, galvanized components, elastomers, sealants, or dissimilar-metal interfaces are permitted. For uncertain chemical duty, start with the corrosion protection review and provide representative analysis rather than a trade name alone.
Fabrication Details Affect Cleanability and Life
Fabrication planning covers plate forming, joint preparation, weld process, distortion control, internal weld profile, access for inspection, and post-fabrication surface treatment. Hygienic or clean service may require smoother internal transitions, drainable bottoms, minimized product traps, and a cleaning system that reaches roof, shell, nozzles, and internal fittings.
Mixing loads, cyclic filling, thermal movement, wind and seismic actions, roof loads, and attached platforms must be included in design. The tank should not be quoted as a shell-only commodity if the operating package includes agitators, coils, insulation, cladding, heavy nozzles, or maintenance platforms.
Inspection Scope Should Be Agreed Before Pricing
A practical inspection and test plan identifies material verification, fit-up checks, weld visual inspection, nondestructive examination, dimensional control, leak or hydrostatic testing, surface acceptance, and final document review. The required methods and acceptance criteria depend on the governing standard and contract; more inspection is not meaningful unless the acceptance basis is clear.
Food and liquid-ingredient buyers should connect material selection to the process duty described on the food and beverage application page. That prevents a storage-tank quotation from overlooking sanitation, drainability, temperature control, and cleaning interfaces.
Define the Supply and Site-Erection Boundary
Welded stainless tanks may be completed in a workshop, shipped in sections, or erected at site. The feasible route depends on diameter, height, road and port limits, lifting capacity, weld quality controls available at site, weather protection, utilities, and local labor qualifications. The enquiry should issue a responsibility matrix that separates supplier, civil contractor, installer, EPC contractor, and owner work. Each bidder should identify deviations rather than silently removing scope.
The interface list should cover foundation design data, anchor system, embedded plates, temporary erection works, scaffolding, cranes, welding power and gases, consumables, weather enclosure, pickling/passivation at site, water for testing, disposal of test water, insulation and cladding, interconnecting piping, electrical work, and commissioning. Export packing and the erection sequence should be coordinated so plate edges and finished surfaces are protected through transport and storage.
Lifecycle review should also confirm internal inspection access, complete drainage, cleaning equipment reach, replacement of instruments and seals, corrosion monitoring, and a documented repair route. A tank that meets initial capacity but cannot be isolated, cleaned, inspected, maintained, or repaired safely is not a complete process-storage solution for continuous industrial service.
