Desalination projects put storage tanks in a demanding environment. Feed water, brine, permeate, cleaning chemicals, coastal air, and high chloride exposure can all influence material selection. Stainless steel tanks are often considered because they offer strong corrosion resistance and cleanability, but the correct grade, surface condition, gasket material, and accessory design still need engineering review.

Separate the storage duties

A desalination plant may require tanks for raw seawater, filtered feed, permeate, backwash water, CIP solution, neutralization, brine, or product water. These duties are not identical. Permeate storage may prioritize hygiene and low contamination risk, while brine or chemical tanks may require stronger corrosion review. Buyers should avoid using one generic tank description for all positions in the process flow.

Confirm grade, chloride level, and cleaning method

Stainless steel selection is sensitive to chloride concentration, temperature, oxygen conditions, and cleaning chemicals. The RFQ should list the stored liquid, chloride range, pH, temperature, cleaning frequency, and any oxidizing agents. Where the buyer expects a specific grade, it should be stated clearly. For bolted systems, gasket selection, bolt material, and sealing details must be compatible with the medium. For welded systems, weld quality, passivation, and inspection should be discussed. Review corrosion protection as a system

Corrosion risk does not stop at the shell plate. Nozzles, manways, supports, ladders, roof components, anchors, and mixed-metal connections can become weak points. Coastal sites also expose external surfaces to salt-laden air. Buyers should request a corrosion review covering the full tank package, not only the main wall material. If the project includes brine or chemical cleaning tanks, conservative material selection is usually cheaper than early repair.
